1732 13th Avenue –West
(Now South-West)
Built in 1912
The first Resident – Reid Barber (62) wife Jean Phoebe (went by Phoebe) Barber (51) had 8 children. They lived here with their four sons, Ephraim Morely (went by Morley) Barber (28), W. Lyell W. Barber (22), Dewey D. Barber (16) And Orval (went by Orval) Clarence barber (14)
For the 1916 Census of Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta, Jean, another daughter and Morley were still living at the residence with Phoebe and Reid.
All moved to Calgary from Owen Sound Ont. Canada Reid Barber was a Porter for CP Rail
The house was assessed in the 1930 at a value of around $4275.00, $250.oo extra was assessed for Plumbing compared with the same house at 1710 13th avenue. We can find no record of just how fancy this plumbing had to be for such a large difference in value.
The present owner Peter Strand Rumpel bought the house in 1996. As a young actor he needed the support of many friends and family members including Tony and Peggy Ollinger and Gary Rumpel to start fixing up the house to live in and rent separate suites. Since then, the home has been the residence to many in the local arts community including Actress Esther Purvis-Smith, sound engineer and musician Kelly Zombar, Musician Belle Plaine, writer-producer Sean Bowie and other theatre and film technicians as well as the founder of Calgary’s underground radio station RadioRadio.
The present garage was purpose built as a multifunction studio and rehearsal space and has seen many recording sessions, acting classes and rehearsals for the likes of Sage Theatre, OBNH Comedy, and several works by playwright Ken Cameron. The space also served as a performance venue for a Japanese Bhuto performance in 1999.
Peter and his wife Kimberly Rondeau are happy to have begun a new exterior renovation this year and hope you love the new look as much as we do!
